Student Financial Grants

Grants for students are available to undergraduates through a handful of programs. The most well-known and common is the Pell Grant. The Pell Grant provides assistance based on a student’s financial needs. The TEACH Grant is available to pay a portion of the education of teachers who want to serve in lower income schools. There is a small number of other federal education grants available.

Finding student financial grants can be done through online searches and talking to advisors at your future college or university. Much of the student financial grant application process is done online. Students seeking financial assistance must fill an online called the Free Application for Free Federal Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA asks a number of questions to determine the student’s level of financial. All federal student grants are based on financial need.

There is some merit based aid available to students. This aid is referred to as scholarships rather than grants. Education grants and scholarships are similar in that they are free money. However, scholarships are based more on merit than on need. A student who excels in academics, sports, leadership, or a special talent may qualify for a scholarship.

Scholarships can be more competitive. To find scholarships, a student can talk to high school counselors or to the college financial aid office.

Grants for student are an enormous help to attend college. Because they need not be paid back, grants for college lessen a student’s burden of debt. Grants will pay a portion of tuition, but usually cannot cover the whole cost. The maximum that a student can receive from a Pell Grant is $5,500 a year.

It is worth the effort to correctly fill out the FAFSA form. The form allows students to apply for whatever education grants, loans, or other assistance that is available. The student registers into the portal at the FAFSA site, enters the information, and returns to update data throughout the time in college.

The reality is that one student financial grant will not cover 100% of school tuition costs. The good news is that a student may receive multiple student financial grants and scholarships. However, you are only allowed to have one Pell Grant for one school. It is allowed to have a number of different grants and scholarships to pay for school.

Students who have the lowest personal or family incomes are most likely to receive multiple education grants. The student can also supplement grants with small loans.
