Green Grants

Green Grants

There are federal, state, and private funder grants available for conservation and environmental sustainability. These green grants help individuals, organizations, and businesses promote conservation of resources while maintaining productivity.

Federal Green Grants

As part of the American Reovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), $100 million was invested in green job training and development. Some of this investment has created more green dollars available today.

The federal government also gives money for green business research and development. These grants called Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants have funds available for the research and development of green technology.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a number of green grant opportunities. The environmental justice small grant program gives grants to non-profits and Native American tribal government that work on a number of environmental issues such as:

  • Air Quality
  • Chemical Risks
  • Hazardous Waste
  • Reducing Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Protecting Water Quality

Federal green grant opportunities can be found on Grants.gov or by monitoring the EPA site.

Green Grants or Assistance to Individuals and Small Businesses:

The federal government has 6 programs that are green grants or benefit programs for conservation. These programs are targeted to individual home owners and business people and include:

Agricultural Management Assistance Program: Cash and technical assistance for private farmers to conserve water.

Conservation Stewardship Program: Producers can receive assistance to create broad and comprehensive conservation measures.

Energy Efficient Mortgage Insurance and FHA Power Saver Loan Program: These are not green grants, but are loan assistance to help home owners purchase energy efficient technology, which will save money in the long run.

Grassland Reserve Program: This is a voluntary program to preserve nature through managing the grazing of livestock.

Healthy Forest Rerve Program: This program helps landowners protect forests on their properties.

State and Local Government Green Grants

State and local funding is available for green grants and vary by jurisdiction. The programs range from installing energy efficient technology in homes, schools, and businesses to planting trees and developing community gardens. To find these green grants, it is best to search local government web sites and talk to local officials.

Foundation and Corporate Green Grants

Private foundations and corporations have numerous grant programs for energy efficiency, conservation and sustainability. Often these funders want to see community participation and voluntarism in these efforts. Sometimes corporate volunteers will team up with community projects to install new technology, clean up lots, and other projects.
